Please pray this book changes lives by changing how believers read God’s word. It will help them get more from their personal Bible reading, build a meaningful routine they can look forward to and move beyond borrowed beliefs to a faith they can call their own.
Enjoy today’s read!
I’ve adapted this excerpt from my soon to be released book that will help believers move beyond borrowed beliefs to a faith they can call their own. This is from a chapter on building a meaningful Bible reading routine they can look forward to.
I’ll be sharing from the book on Saturdays now through the book’s release. It just moved into the professional production phase. I’d love to hear your thoughts:
Before jumping in, you’ll get more out of this post if you read John 4:1-15 first.
When you read the Bible, you will inevitably encounter things that you still don’t understand. Let them provoke your curiosity, bring conviction and cause you to study more.
You might sense your need to investigate a topic, phrase or event more and integrate it into your spiritual life and walk with God.
After all, the goal is to not only know what God’s word says and means but also to put it into practice.
Hopefully, you’re building a routine and know how to establish truth and apply it to your life. Scripture is becoming relational now, and more rewards and discoveries await.
And now that you’ve made some significant progress in reading your Bible with greater understanding, it’s time to make sure you sustain that progress.
But you’ll need more than enthusiasm to do so.
A famous encounter in Scripture can serve as a great reminder. The delight in your interactions with God’s word comes from drawing from its depths.
God’s word is likened to a spring of living water. It’s so easy to get a refreshing drink from the abundance of truth, wisdom and practical guidance Scripture offers.
But it’s also a storehouse of deeper meaning and application as you improve your Bible study and reading skills.
When Jesus met a woman at a well in Samaria, she was unfulfilled. Her life was not going as planned, and she didn’t like where circumstances had taken her.
As she goes about her normal routine, God shows up.
He loves to do that.
She meets Jesus at a well and says something I hope you will remember when you feel like the Bible’s too deep or too much to handle:
John 4:10–11. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
Scripture is a deep well of living water ready to refresh and revive all who visit it.
It’s as necessary for life as fresh water.
Yet at times we lack the ability to draw it out.
For you, that’s all changing now. In this and the remaining chapters, you’re going to have some tools put in your hands to draw from the deeper waters of God’s word.
I’m also going to introduce you to several methods of Bible study that will keep you drawing from the well of Scripture God has given to sustain you.
Vance Havner said, “The storehouse of God’s Word was never meant for mere scrutiny, not even primarily for study but for sustenance… It is ration for the soul…”
When you read your Bible to grow and not just glean, you’ll flourish spiritually.
You won’t just flip through some pages and rehearse what you already know or what others have told you about what you’re reading.
You’ll be nourished, enthused and awakened to the treasure trove of truth that awaits the more serious student of Scripture.
Let’s look at four things that will assist in deepening your comprehension of the Bible. We’re going to start with…
I hope you enjoyed this excerpt from Bible Reading Made Easier & More Enjoyable (currently in production with an updated release target of mid-January).
I’d love to hear what helps you draw wisdom, understanding and application from the well of God’s word. Maybe you’re finding that hard. Reply and let me know your experiences.
